Vivian C. Szabo, 92, of Rogers City, formerly of Grand Lake passed away January 31, 2015 at Rogers City Tendercare. She was born May 7, 1922 in Detroit to Eugene and Helen (Schemansky) Schulte.

Mrs. Szabo is survived by her husband, Kalman; three children, Ethel Szabo of Eastpointe, Marie (Greg) Hamel of Rogers City and Evelyn (John) Jameson of St. Clair Shores; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation was at the Beck Funeral Home Tuesday with rosary that evening.

Visitation resumed at St. Ignatius Catholic Church Wednesday through time of Mass with the Rev. Sylvestre Obwaka officiating.

Donna M. McDiarmid, 89, of Indian River, died at Bay Bluffs Emmet County Medical Care Facility in Harbor Springs Friday, January 23, 2015.

Surviving Donna are her daughter, Janine (Derrick) Cymbalski of Alanson; five sons, William (Penny) Lownsberry and Lamont Lownsberry, both of Wolverine, Roland (Michele) Lownsberry of Afton, Mike Lownsberry of Fife Lake and Tracy (Brenda) Lownsberry of Crosby, North Dakota; 26 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Cremation arrangements were in care of the Chagnon Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1830 Shaw Road, Petoskey.  Online condolences may be made at www.chagnonfh.com.

Michael “Mick” O’Meara

Michael “Mick” O’Meara, 91, of Onaway died at home Wednesday, January 28, 2015. The son of Michael Patrick and Elizabeth (Robert) O’Meara, Mick was born September 22, 1923, was raised in Onaway and graduated from Onaway High School.

Surviving Mick are his two sons, Mike O’Meara (Fran Chagnon) of Onaway and Brian (Debbie) O’Meara of Millersburg; three daughters, Pam (Dale) Willey and Barbara (Todd) Willey, both of Onaway, and Mary (Matt) Harley of Ortonville; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; as well as his dearly-loved dachshund, Fritz. Mick was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; son, Kevin; and two half-sisters, Kate and Pauline.

Visitation and a Rosary service were held at the Chagnon Funeral Home Friday, January 30, 2015. The funeral Mass was at St. Paul Catholic Church in Onaway Saturday, January 31, 2015. The Rev. Chet Collins officiated. Mick’s final resting place will be at St. Paul Cemetery in Onaway. Donald Pynnonen

Donald Pynnonen died peacefully at his home January 12, 2015 at the age of 88 surrounded by his family. He was a resident on Black Lake over the past 65 years.

Donald is survived by six loving children, Jeff Pynnonen, Linda (David) Sandvik, Susan (Tony) Bernardo, Mary Ellen (David Rocco) Pynnonen-Rocco, Liz (Rusty) Gowland and Ed (Anne) Pynnonen; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Irene Sanger Chamblee of East Lansing; a brother, Ole (Betty) Pynnonen of Basalt, Colorado, a sister in-law,  Mary Ellen Pynnonen of Petoskey; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Jane Lobdell Pynnonen; brothers Osmo, Eino, Elmer and Simo Pynnonen; and sister Nellie Worsley.

Don was born in Grayling April 12, 1926. He was the seventh of eight children from parents that immigrated from Toivakka, Finland and was raised on a farm in Lewiston.

There will be a two hour visitation at 10 a.m. Friday, February 13, at A.J. Desmond & Sons, 32515 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak, MI with service at noon.

A graveside memorial service will take place at the Waverly Township Cemetery, Onaway Saturday, July 11.

Donations can be made to the Friends of Bonz and Stewart Beaches Scholarship Fund, that grants college scholarships to graduating seniors from Onaway High School, and can be sent to Friends of Bonz and Stewart Beaches Scholarship Fund, PO Box 362, Onaway, MI 49765 or the charity of your choice.

Wayne John Morgan

Wayne John Morgan, 66, of Belknap Township died peacefully at home on February 7, 2015.

He was born September 25, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio to Rae and Violet (Kowalski) Morgan.

Mr. Morgan is survived by his wife, Fran; six children, Connie Kulik, Wayne Jr. (Kari), Andrew, Carrie (John) Sobeck, Michelle (Casey) Milbocker and Kelli (Jim McMasters) Morgan; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Roger (Bonnie) Frye; and his sister, Rae Tulgestka.

Per Wayne’s request, private family services have taken place.

Cremation arrangements are in care of the Beck Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jeffrey Kurt Londgren

The Rev. Jeffrey Kurt Londgren passed from this life into the presence of his Savior Jesus February 2, 2015, at the age of 59 in Charlevoix.

Pastor Londgren was born July 29, 1955, in Marshall, Minnesota where he also grew up and attended school.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Elisa; their six children, Brandon (Rachel) of Mankato; Jerusha (Andrew) Cascione of Apple Valley, Minnesota; Trevor (Jennifer) of Mankato; Peter of Mankato; Breanna (Benjamin) Castiglione of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and James; four grandchildren, Jacob, Noah, Aria and Jonathan; his sisters, Cheryl (Mark) Nook of Billings, Montana and Susan (Harvey) Reckard of Menomonie, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Duane and Shirley Londgren of Marshall.

Visitation was February 6 at the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. The funeral service was February 7 at Faith Lutheran Church in Hillman. Memorials may be directed to Bethany Lutheran College or to one of his churches.

Althea T. Granholm

Althea T. Granholm, 100, of Millersburg, passed away peacefully at home February 9, 2015.

She was born July 5, 1914 in Case Township to Martin and Barbara (Devitt) Trafelet.

Mrs. Granholm is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Don) Dewey of Alma and Patricia (John) Schwabacher of Charlotte, North Carolina; three granddaughters, Patti (Arlen) Lesatz, Peggy (Robert) Yates and Krista (Chris) Morris; six great-grandsons, Michael, Jacob, Cody, Colton, Corben and Corey; and three great-granddaughters, Holly, Sara Grace and Ellie.

Visitation was at the Millersburg United Methodist Church Wednesday through the time of funeral with the Rev. Carmen Cook officiating.

Burial will take place next to her husband at the Albert Township Cemetery near Lewiston.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Michigan or Millersburg United Methodist Church in memory of Althea Granholm.

Arrangements are in care of the Beck Funeral Home.

James (Jim) Bellmore

James (Jim) Bellmore passed away in Lyons, Georgia February 2, 2015.

Jim was born in Rogers City September 9, 1934 to Charles and Clara (Siecinski) Bellmore.

Surviving are his sisters, Blanche (Norman) Buczkowski of Rogers City and Pat (Norvel) Koss of Posen; a brother, Tony (Beverly) Bellmore of Newfield, New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert C. Bellmore.

Jim served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1960.

A private service will be held at a later date when funeral arrangements are complete.

Memorials may be made to St. Ignatius Catholic School, Hospice of the Sunrise Shore or a charity of friend’s choice.

 


Mary “Inez” Hubbard

Mary “Inez” Hubbard, 90, of Onaway, formerly of Howell, died Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Tendercare Health Center in Rogers City. The daughter of William and Esther Mae (Merrihew) Sharp, Inez was born in Howell October 6, 1924. She married Lon Hubbard May 27, 1967. After his death March 8, 2002, she moved to Onaway.

Surviving Inez are her daughter, Patricia (Jake) Dankers of Onaway; a grandson, Jim Dankers of Onaway; two granddaughters, Lisa Rybak of Ferndale and Tammy Cook of Onaway; great-grandchildren Casey, Amanda, Matthew and Sarah; and great-great-grandchildren Tyler and Gracie. Inez was preceded in death by her husband, Lon; two sisters; and three brothers.

Cremation arrangements were in care of the Chagnon Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held next summer at North Allis Township Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider a donation in memory of Mary Inez Hubbard to the Onaway Ambulance Equipment Fund. Alphonse “Al” E. Gapczynski, 83, of Rogers City passed away February 13, 2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw.

He was born February 2, 1932 in Rogers City to Cash and Jennie (Styma) Gapczynski.

Mr. Gapczynski is survived by his brother, Joseph of Rogers City; two nephews, Gregory (Cathy) of Columbia, South Carolina and Jeffrey (Christine) of Clinton Township; a niece, Ann Putnam of Keller, Texas; six great-nieces-and-nephews, Jason (Selina), Aaron, Lacy (Jim) Otteman, Jill (Mark) Nelson, Andrew Putnam and Jenny Putnam; five great-great-nieces-and-nephews, Taylor, Jaymes, Lauren, and Leo Otteman and Tyler Nelson.

Visitation was at the Beck Funeral Home Wednesday from 3 until 8 p.m. with rosary at 6:30 p.m.

Visitation will resume today (Thursday) at St. Ignatius Catholic Church from 9 a.m. until time of Mass at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Sylvestre Obwaka officiating.

Rogers City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 607 will accord military honors following Mass.

Interment will take place at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Ignatius Catholic School in memory of Alphonse Gapczynski.

Cody Clarence Kelly, 20, of Hampton, Virginia was killed January 31, 2015 in Newport News, Virginia of an accidental shooting. Cody was born April 16, 1994 to Annette (James) Cherrette of Rogers City and the late Michael E. Lewis. He is survived by his mother Annette; sisters, Shawna Patterson, Nancy Palmer, Raye Farley and Samantha Kelly; a niece; six nephews; grandparents, Althea Luebke, Helen (Carlyle) Richeson, and Thomasine Lewis; and a great-grandmother Emily Brege.

Cody was preceded in death by grandparents, Robert Luebke, Fred E. Lewis, Charlie and Ruth Patterson; and a great-grandfather, Clarence Brege. Funeral and burial were Monday, February 6, in Williamsburg Virginia.

John R. Mehmet Sr., 86, of Cheboygan, died at his son’s home in Petoskey Tuesday, February 10, 2015.

Surviving are John’s son, John R. (Jan) Mehmet Jr.; two sisters, Barbara Clark of Harper Woods and Betty Rose of Aylett, Virginia; and a brother, Henry (Carol) Mehmet of Fredricksburg, Virginia.

Visitation and the funeral service were held at the Chagnon Funeral Home in Onaway Monday, February 16, 2015. John’s final resting place will be in Cheboygan at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Katherine “Kathy” M. Whitaker, 62, of Port Huron, passed away January 31, 2015 at home after a long illness.

She was born August 4, 1952 in Rogers City to Marge and Ralph Erickson.

Kathy married Donald “Harold” Whitaker May 24, 1974 in Port Huron.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Harold Whitaker of Port Huron; parents, Ralph and Marjorie (Sobeck) Erickson of Rogers City, a sister, Mary (Robert) Smith of Sliver Springs, Florida; a sister, Lori (Richard) Jones of Port Huron; and a brother, John Erickson of Rogers City.   Funeral services were held in Port Huron.

Terry Lee DeWyre

Terry Lee DeWyre, 65, of Midland, went to be with the Lord Saturday, February 21, 2015, while in Fort Myers, Florida.  He was born in Alpena, February 14, 1950. He graduated from Rogers City High School in 1968 and then went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University.  Terry is survived by his mother, Ruth DeWyre; his lovely “bride” Mary (Streich) DeWyre married 41 years; his two daughters, Amy Inman and her husband Chris; Jill Graetz and her husband Steve; his grandchildren, Anderson, Oliver, Ellery and Isaiah; his three brothers, Mike DeWyre (Joy), Jim DeWyre (Linda) and Larry DeWyre (Karen); and his sister, Judy Lincoln (Steve); 26 nieces and nephews; and countless loving family and friends. His father, William DeWyre, preceded him in death.

The family will receive visitation from friends beginning at 5 p.m. today (Thursday, February 26) at Beck Funeral Home, in Rogers City. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 27, at St. Michael Lutheran Church, Belknap.

Contributions in memory of Terry may be directed to the American Heart Association or charity of friend’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Beck Funeral Home, Rogers City.

 

Jane E. Taylor

Jane E. Taylor, 78, of Cheboygan, passed away February 18, 2015 at Tendercare of Cheboygan.

A resident of Cheboygan since 1982, moving from Onaway, Jane was born April 16, 1936 in Onaway, the daughter of George and Ida (Arlt) LaFrance.

Surviving are her daughter, Jannie (Marlon) Richardson of Newnan, Georgia; two sons, Dale (Jewell) Martin and Donald (Debbie) Martin, both of Cheboygan; six grandchildren, Ashley, Michael, Brandy, Deana, Gina and Casey Jo; eight great-grandchildren, Hattie, Caleb, Michael, Jason, Lillie, Haley, Austin and Brooklin; a sister, Dorothy Brooks of Onaway; a brother, Harold LaFrance of Posen; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Friday, February 20, at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home. The funeral service was Saturday, February 21, at St. James Episcopal Church, with the Rev. John Wallace officiating.  Burial will be at Pinehill Cemetery in the spring.

Renetta Merlee Ganske, 85, of Onaway, died at home Sunday, February 22, 2015. The daughter of John Robert and Martha (Latsch) Mason, Renetta was born May 17, 1929 in Tower.

Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Erwin “Pep” Ganske of Onaway; three daughters, Sandra (Glen) Hunter of Toledo, Ohio, Sharon (Thomas) Kazyak of Frankenmuth, and Kimberly Christensen of Napoleon, Ohio; one son, Erwin Jr. (Rebecca) Ganske of Napoleon; five grandchildren, Brent, Gabrielle, Kristopher, Daniel and Alyssa; and five great-grandchildren, Willahmena, Michaelangelo, Trent, Sydney and Daniel. Renetta also leaves her sister, Isabel DeRosia of Onaway; brother, Lloyd (June) Mason of Tower, sisters-in-law Elaine Orcutt of Alpena, Carol (Larry) Brownell of Flint and Evelyn Wolgast of Ocqueoc; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was at the Chagnon Funeral Home Wednesday, February 25, 2015 and resumed Thursday, February 26, 2015 until the time of the funeral service at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Onaway.

The Rev. Josh Ketelsen officiated. Renetta’s final resting place will be in Tower at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Her family has suggested donations honoring the memory of Renetta to the Onaway Ambulance Equipment Fund or to Hospice of the Straits. Condolences may be shared with Renetta’s family at www.chagnonfh.com.

Phyllis June Syrett, 91, of Rogers City Passed away February 25, 2015 at her son’s home in Gaylord.

She was born May 26, 1923 in Alpena to Louis and Ruth (Pake) Selke. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Lawrence; two sons. Donn (Pamela) of Gaylord and Terry (Sharon) of Harrisville; three grandchildren, Melissa Cousineau, Heather Syrett and Eric Auensen; two great-grandchildren, Alaini Cousineau and Alex Varty; and a brother, KayDon (Audrey) Selke; two sisters, Urlene Cousineau and Donna (Dick) Peacock. Visitation was at the Beck Funeral Home Sunday. Visitation resumed Monday at Westminster Presbyterian Church through time of funeral with the Rev. Dr. Robert Case officiating.

Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum in memory of Phyllis Syrett.

Dorothy Jean Brege, 84, of Belknap Township passed away February 27, 2015 at Medilodge of Hillman.

She was born September 30, 1930 in Pennsylvania to Edward and Blanche (Steele) Gemmil. Mrs. Brege is survived by four children, Norman (Eileen) Brege of Rogers City, David Brege of Rogers City, Calvin Brege of Hawks and Christine (Gary Krajniak) Brege of Alpena; seven grandchildren, Jessica (John) Dietlin, Russell (Erica) Brege, Randy (Megan) Brege, Matthew Fleming, Craig (Tristen) Phillips, Christine Phillips and Alan Phillips; seven great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Beatrice Reisener, Isabelle Jaeger, Ruby (Marvin) Makowski and Bonnie Bruning.

Visitation was at the Beck Funeral Home Sunday. Visitation continued at the funeral home Monday through time of funeral with the Rev. Keith Schneider officiating.

Interment will take place at St. Michael Lutheran Cemetery.

Leonard L. Wozniak, 89, of Posen passed away Sunday March 1, 2015.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret (Krajniak), of 64 years; children, Deborah (Greg) Hill of Ohio and Gary (Marie) Wozniak of Posen; grandchildren, Christopher Hill of Arizona, Stacy (Kyle) Kreis of Florida, Lindsay Hill of Ohio and Elizabeth Wozniak of Posen; great-granddaughter, Kinley Kreis; a brother, the Rev. Anthony Wozniak of Pennsylvania; four sisters, Anita Tucholski of Ohio, Sister Lois Wozniak and Sister Tereska Wozniak both of Bay City and Sally Mulka of North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. Preceeding him in death was his brother, Arthur Wozniak; and his parents, Anthony and Theresa (Purol) Wozniak.

Burial and arrangements for a memorial service to be held at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Posen at a later date will be handled by Beck Funeral Home of Rogers City.

She was born January 24, 1919 in Rogers City to William and Lillie (Klee) Haselhuhn.

Helen is survived by her nephew Mark (Evelyn) Berg of Rogers City; and several great-nieces-and -nephews.

Visitation was at the Beck Funeral Home Tuesday through time of funeral with the Rev. Charles Schultz officiating.

Interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.
