Rio Rita Thomas

Rio Rita Thomas, 79, of Onaway, died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at home. The daughter of Oliver Wendell Sr. and Marie Elizabeth (Hodges) Holmes, Rita was born July 6, 1935 in Coffee County, Alabama.

She married Roscoe Donald Thomas in Mississippi April 1, 1953.

Rita worked in the shipping department at the Dolly Madison Bakery. In 1983 she moved to Onaway from Alabama.  Rita enjoyed playing Yahtzee, reading, gardening and canning.

Surviving Rita are her two sons, Roscoe “JR” Thomas of Phoenix City, Alabama and Elmer Thomas of Columbus, Georgia; many grandchildren; and three sisters. Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe D. Thomas; her son, George Henry Thomas; her longtime companion, James Blair Brown; and two brothers.

Cremation arrangements were in care of the Chagnon Funeral Home.

Robert B. Edmonds

Robert B. Edmonds, 92, of Onaway, died at home Thursday, January 8, 2015. He was born to Lawrence and Charlotte (Gotham) Edmonds in Dearborn March 23, 1922. After his first wife passed away, Bob married Norma (Haywood) Travis July 26, 1979 in Cheboygan.

Surviving Bob are his wife of more than 35 years, Norma Edmonds of Onaway; a son, Bruce Edmonds of West Branch; two daughters, Cassandra Edmonds of Pontiac and Sarah (Rod) Boger of Mississippi; three stepdaughters, Kathy Morgan of Hubbard Lake, and Colleen (Gary) VanHuysen and Sharyn (Ray) Malone, both of Onaway; three stepsons, Ray Travis of Onaway, John Travis of Petoskey and Ed (Tammy) Travis of Cheboygan; 20 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Chagnon Funeral Home Monday, January 12. Elder Carol Latsch officiated. Bob’s final resting place will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Melva B. Bruning

Melva B. Bruning, 93, of Rogers City passed away January 14, 2015 at Rogers City Tendercare.

She was born November 6, 1921 in Hagensville to William and Gertrude (Bredow) Hagen.

Mrs. Bruning is survived by two sons, Mark (Donna) Bruning of Rogers City and Timothy (Carolyn) Bruning of Rogers City; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may visit at St. John Lutheran Church Saturday, January 24, from 10 a.m. through time of her memorial service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Eric Voigt officiating.

Mrs. Bruning has willed her body to Michigan State University. Memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church Radio Fund.

Helen Harrington, 92, of Rogers City passed away January 12, 2015 at Rogers City Tendercare. She was born May 1, 1922 to Bruno and Frances (Karlak) Mikolojeski.

Helen is survived by a daughter, Sharon Graham; four grandchildren, all of Rogers City; and a sister, Dolores D’Ascenzo of Plymouth Township. Raymond H. Dembny, 84 of Rogers City and, formerly, the Flint area, passed away, January 19, 2015, at the Hospice House in Cheboygan.

He was born in Rogers City, June 18, 1930, to Jacob and Julia (Zapczynski) Dembny.

Raymond is survived by his loving daughter, Lynn and much-loved son-in-law, Alan Dawson; brothers, Leonard (Margie) and James (Eleanor) Dembny; sisters-in-law, Gertie, Betty, and Cecelia Dembny; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as several close, dear friends.

Ray requested no services. A Mass will be said in his honor sometime in the future.

In lieu of flowers, you are asked to support St. Ignatius Catholic School.

Sidney “Sonny” DuBois, 72, of Onaway died January 20, 2015 at home.

He was born February 28, 1942 in Detroit to Sidney and Dorothy (Dyball) DuBois.

Mr. DuBois is survived by his wife, Isabella “Izzy;” four children, Yvonne (Scott Sami) DuBois, Colette (David) Cousineau, Shane (Nicole Wherry) DuBois and Jim Tennant; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Treva Stoner and Shirley (Bill) Hoffman; two brothers, Tom (Jane) DuBois and Randy (Craig) DuBois; mother-in-law, Ruth Schultz; and a brother-in-law, Ed Schultz.

Friends may visit at Stoney Creek Lounge Saturday, January 31, from noon through time of his memorial service at 1 p.m.

Alice Spencer, 94 of Hawks passed away Sunday morning January 25, 2015 at Tendercare in Rogers City.

The daughter of August and Martha (Schleben) Hamann was born April 14, 1920 in Rogers City.

Surviving are two sons, Orlan (Lorraine) of Hawks and Douglas (Jean) of Lachine; two daughters, Audrey (Vincent) Filarski of Posen and Georgene (John) Urban of Hawks; a brother, Fred (Wilma) Hamann of Warren; 17 grandchildren, Karen (John) Miller, Ricky Kortman, Diane (Jon) Jackson, Lisa Kortman, Heidi (Todd Plath) Kortman, Kevin (Sue) Filarski, Chris (Debbie) Filarski, Joseph (Kathy) Filarski, Thomas Filarski, Jeffery (Mary) Filarski, Kim (Jim) Roberts, Randy (Jane) Urban, Elgene (Clare) Urban, Bradley Kortman, Jody (Richard) Newman, Amy (Bob) VanHoven and Eric (Patty) Kortman; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; seven stepchildren, Dale (Mildred) Spencer of Texas, Donna (Howard) Kitter of Alpena, Sandra Hawley of Florida, Clyde (Judy) Spencer of Florida, Sharon (Lawrence) McCracken of South Carolina, Linda Fleck of Florida and Jack (Jean) Spencer of Texas; 51 step-grandchildren; 89 step-great-grandchildren; 52 step-great-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Wednesday, January 28, at Hentkowski Funeral Home from 4 until 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue today (Thursday) morning at Faith Lutheran Church in Hawks from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service with the Rev.  Dr. Jack Ferguson Officiating. Burial will be at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Hawks.

Memorials are suggested to Faith Lutheran Church of Hawks.

Virginia Lee Plume

Virginia Lee Plume, 85, of Ocqueoc, left for her heavenly home from Tendercare Health Center in Cheboygan Friday January 23, 2015. Virginia is survived by her husband of 66 years, Garnet Plume also at Tendercare Health Center in Cheboygan; children, Nathan Plume, Darlene Childers (Norm Rennich) and Marian (Dick) Overman, of Casper, Wyoming; Reneta Gauthier of Topinabee; Nathalie (Mike) Sibbald of Sault Ste. Marie; Linda Plume and fiancé, Doug Gehl of Alpena; and Renee (Bill) LaKies of the family home in Ocqueoc; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.  Virginia also leaves a brother, Curtis Bentley of Salt Lake City, Utah; sisters, Ardis Dosh of Battle Creek and Norma Winter of Mesa, Arizona; plus many nieces and nephews.

Cremation arrangements were in care of the Chagnon Funeral Home.  A memorial service will be held in the spring. John Noffze

John Noffze, 73, of Hillman, went to be with his Lord Monday, January 19, 2015, at his home.

John was born in Rogers City August 24, 1941 to Henry and Bertha (Ristow) Noffze.

Surviving are his wife, Beth; children, Brenda (Brian) Budnik of Alpena, Matt (Kathy) Noffze of Hillman and Natalie (Darrell) Schultz of Sellersburg, Indiana.  His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Taylor Noffze (fiancée Chelsea Stevens), Emilee Noffze, Benjamin and Brett Budnik, as well as Kylie and Hanna Schultz.  He is also survived by a brother, Dale (Kathlyn) Noffze of Rogers City.

Visitation was Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church in Royston and continued Friday until the funeral service with the Rev. Jason Mandley officiating.  Arrangements were handled by the Bannan Funeral Home of Hillman.

Interment will be at Montmorency Township  Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran School or Hillman Community Education Foundation.

Albert Henry Bischoff, 86, of Ocqueoc passed away Thursday, January 22, 2015. He was born in Ocqueoc May 10, 1928 to Fred and Augusta Bischoff.

He is survived by his daughter, Ann (Alan) Sunshine of Macomb; and two sons, Tom (Holli) Bischoff of Onaway and Jim (Tammy) Bischoff of Wolverine. He also leaves seven grandchildren, Kortni (Tom) Crawford and Rachel (Micky) Peel, both of Onaway, Jason, Ryan and Sandy Bischoff, and Robert and Nicole Sunshine; as well as four great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Charlotte Crawford, and Bridger and Sydney Clare Peel.

Visitation was at the Chagnon Funeral Home Friday, January 23, 2015 and resumed Saturday January 24, 2015 in Indian River at the Cross in the Woods until the time of the funeral Mass. The Rev. Michael Haney, O.F.M. officiated. Albert’s final resting place will be at North Allis Township Cemetery. Theodore James DeMoines, known as T.J., 29, of Onaway died Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey after battling cancer for eight years. The son of James W. and Kelly Jo (Smith) DeMoines, T.J. was born September 9, 1985 in Gaylord.

Surviving T.J. are his mother, Kelly Jo Miller (Norman DePriester) of Onaway; a sister, Candy DeMoines (John Labadie) of Newberry; three half-sisters, Chandra Romero of Texas, Janelle (Cliff) Peters of Onaway and Michelle Gensen of Washington State; two special nephews, Allen and Rohen Clark of Newberry; and his grandparents, Ted and Jean Smith of Houghton Lake. T.J. also leaves four stepsisters, Leslie DePriester of Hastings, Tory Kay (Gilly) Douglas of Tennessee, Amy Jo Molski of Traverse City and Jessika Arkwood of Petoskey; three stepbrothers, Tony (Rachele) Molski of Traverse City, Scott Gelo of Onaway and Cory (Debbie) DePriester of Petoskey; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. T.J. was preceded in death by his father, James W. DeMoines; his stepfather, Robert Miller; and his grandparents.

Visitation and the funeral service were at the Chagnon Funeral Home in Onaway Saturday, January 17, 2015. A friend of the family, Tom Anderson, officiated. Angela Daly Crooks was born August 13, 1916 in Onaway to Irish immigrant parents, James and Margaret (Mangan) Daly and passed away January 30, 2015.

Angela is survived by her children, Robert (Linda) Urlaub of Rogers City, Ruth (Erhardt) Schultz of Canada Creek, Barbara Ferrell of Panama City, Florida, Marilyn Urlaub (Dr. Ansari, friend) of Farmington Hills, Gayle Elowsky of Onaway, Kathryn Foley (Bob Hook) of DeWitt, Husky Crooks of Interlochen and Terry Crooks of Traverse City; grandchildren, Denise (Don) Eickmeyer, Mark (Shelley) Schultz, Dan (Monica) Schultz, Mike (Karen) Schultz, Dennis (Joen) Schultz, Bobbie Urlaub, Jim Urlaub, Kris (Bobby) Lijewski, Randy (Melissa) Ferrell, Chris Konieczny, Scott (Amie) Konieczny, Jackie (Jim) Brasseur, Jennifer Elowsky, Jeff Hook, Connie Hook and Jay Hook; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

As the oldest of 11, Angela was very close to her two sisters and eight brothers. She is survived by three brothers, Jim (Bette) Daly, Terry (Jo) Daly and Bill (Carlee) Daly; and a sister, Kathleen (Dave) Filener; sisters-in-law, Renee Daly, Shirley Daly and Agnes Kastner; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home Friday from 1:30 through time of her funeral at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Schultz officiating.

Interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Onaway Girls’ Basketball Program, St. John Lutheran Church in Hagensville or Hospice of the Sunrise Shore.

Frank R. McFalda, 96, World War II veteran and resident of Posen, passed away January 30, 2015.

Frank was born September 25, 1918 to Felix and Lucille (Koss) MacFalda.

Mr. McFalda leaves to mourn his passing, niece Halina Cochrane and family; sister-in-law, Theresa McFalda; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home today (Thursday) from 4 until 8 p.m. with rosary at 6:30 followed by parish wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at St. Casimir Catholic Church Friday from 10 a.m. through time of Mass at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Arthur Duchnowicz officiating.

Posen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7804 will accord military honors following Mass.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Casimir Catholic Church for Masses for the repose of Frank’s soul.

Mick O’Meara, 91, of Onaway passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at his home. Surviving are two sons, Mike O’Meara (Fran Chagnon) of Onaway and Brian (Debbie) O’Meara of Millersburg; three daughters, Pam (Dale) Willey of Onaway, Mary (Matt) Harley of Ortonville and Barbara (Todd) Willey of Onaway; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Friday, January 30, at the Chagnon Funeral Home. Rosary Service was Friday evening at the Chagnon Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was Saturday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Onaway. Interment will be at Paul Catholic Cemetery, Onaway.


Hilda Rose Bauer

Hilda Rose Bauer, 99, of Rogers City passed away January 31, 2015 at Golden Beach Manor.

She was born July 28, 1915 in Pontiac to Charles and Eleanor (Suppus) Young.

Mrs. Bauer is survived by two children, Carolyn (Gordon) Brazas of Valle Crucis, North Carolina and Dale (Patricia) Bauer of Rogers City; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Joyce Young, Doris Young, Dorothy Brewer and Blanche O’Dell; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Beck Funeral Home will announce a complete obituary when the date is set for her funeral later this spring.

Burial will take place next to her husband in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of the Sunrise Shore or Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rogers City.

Mary Ann Patzer, 87, of Rogers City passed away January 27, 2015 at Golden Beach Manor.

She was born July 17, 1927 in Posen to Peter and Felixa (Swinerski) Rozmyslowicz.

Mary is survived by nine children, David (Becky) Lijewski, Robert Lijewski, Beverly Ustazewski, Sandra White, Thomas (Kathy) Lijewski, Edward (Cathy) Lijewski, Joan Ravezzani, Lester (Vicki) Lijewski and Mary (Craig) Vining; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Eleanor Kamyszek and Dorothy Skaggs.

Per Mary’s request, private family services will take place this summer.

Johanna Dorothea (Bruder) Pauly, 97, formerly of Moltke Township, went home to be with her Savior January 31, 2015 in Southgate, where she had resided with her daughter and son-in-law for the past three years.

Johanna was born July 17, 1917 in Moltke Township, the seventh child of Fred O. and Augusta (Schaedig) Bruder.

Johanna is survived by two daughters, Lorraine (Max) Smith of Milan, Tennessee and Marlaine (Norman) Miller of Southgate; two grandchildren, John Wallanse and Amy Dodge; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation and services was held at Molnar Funeral Home in Southgate Wednesday, February 4.  Graveside services will be held in spring at Immanuel Lutheran Church cemetery where she will be buried next to her husband and daughter.  Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Moltke or Christ the King Lutheran Church, Southgate or charity of choice.

Matthew James Soik, 52, of Posen died January 28, 2015 at Medilodge of Hillman.

He was born July 21, 1962 in Rogers City to Emil and Julianne (Greengtski) Soik.

He is survived by his daughter, Shania Soik of Alpena; a stepson, Tanner of Alpena; parents, Emil and Julianne of Posen; seven siblings, Paul (Gail) Soik of Posen, Amy (Duane) Chojnacki of Hawks, Mark (Monique) of Ossineke, Emil (Laura) of Wales, Eugene (Jenny) of Posen, Julie (Mike) Cousineau of Posen and Timothy Soik of Posen; also many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Cremation arrangements are in care of the Beck Funeral Home.

A private family service will take place at a later date.

Frank E. Cicero, 75, of Rogers City passed away Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Alpena Regional Medical Center.

He was born December 23, 1939 in Rogers City to Friederich “Fritz” and Marion (Rusch) Cicero.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria of 44 years; two daughters, Angela Cicero of Alpena and Sarah (Gillian) Jacques of Grand Rapids; two sons, Nicholas (Rachel) Cicero of Des Moines, Iowa and Eric Cicero of West Bloomfield; 12 grandchildren, Brittany, Wendi, Frank, Logan, Lucia, Wyatt, Ewan, Cormac, Justeen, Anthony, Dominic and Keegan; one great-granddaughter, Nevaeh; his sister, Betty Gapczynski; and father-in-law, Leon Delekta. Frank is also survived by: Patrick and Jean, Daniel, Larry and Rita, Marvin, Jim, Diane, Rich and Linda, and Lisa.

Visitation was at the Beck Funeral Home Wednesday from 3 until 8 p.m. with rosary at 6:30 p.m. followed by parish wake service at 7 p.m.  Visitation will resume at St. Ignatius Catholic Church today (Thursday) from 9 a.m. through time of Mass at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Sylvestre Obwaka officiating.

Rogers City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 607 will accord military honors following Mass.
