Warren C. Guinther

Warren C. Guinther, 90, of Ocqueoc, died Saturday morning July 11, 2015 at Tendercare Health Center in Cheboygan. The son of William and Mary Ella (Thorne) Guinther, Warren was born in Flint February 25, 1925. He married Inez Julian and to their union they were blessed with five children. Inez preceded him in death in 1996.  Warren then married Helen V. (Short) Guinther November 16, 1996 in Clio and they moved to Ocqueoc shortly thereafter.

Surviving Warren is his son, Warren (Carol) Guinther of Mt. Morris; daughters, Kathy Thomas of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Judy (Bob) Torok of Otisville, Brenda (Mike) Marble of Swartz Creek and Nicole Guinther (Travis) of Howell; step-daughters, Mary (Gary) Wood-Ketchum of Onaway, Edna (Jerry) Austin of Falls City, Nebraska, Carole Stewart of Benton, Illinois, Billie (Jim) Beverly of Chipley, Florida and Donna Hansel (Robin) of Cheboygan; as well as his sister, Mary Lou Thorington of Gladwin, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Wednesday July 15, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will resume today (Thursday July 16) from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. all at the Chagnon Funeral Home in Onaway. The Rev. Denver Dekeyser will officiate.

Onaway Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5857 will have graveside military honors at Riverside Cemetery in Millersburg following the funeral service. Eleanor Wirgau

Eleanor Wirgau, 89, of Rogers City passed away July 13, 2015 at Rogers City Tendercare.

She was born January 8, 1926 in Rogers City to Michael and Pelagia (Buza) Grohowski.

On October 12, 1946 she married Ivan O. Wirgau at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Eleanor was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and a former member of its Rosary Society.

Mrs. Wirgau is survived by six children, Kim (Elaine) Wirgau of North Carolina, Andrea Socia of Grand Rapids, Ivan (Holly) Wirgau of Rogers City, Tom (Madelene) Wirgau of Three Rivers, Brian (Christine) Wirgau of Marshall and Wayne Wirgau of Grand Rapids; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Conley of Rogers City; two brothers, Edward Grohowski and James (Patricia) Grohowski, both of Alpena; and a sister-in-law; Margaret “Katy” Grohowski of Rogers City.

Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home today (Thursday) from 4 until 8 p.m. with the parish wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume Friday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church from 9 a.m. until time of Mass at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Sylvestre Obwaka officiating.

Inurnment will take place at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of Michigan or St. Ignatius Catholic School.

Mark Leonard Rotarius Sr.

Mark Leonard Rotarius, Sr., 86, of Onaway, passed away on Wednesday July 15, 2015 at his home.  Mark was born the youngest of 18 children on July 9, 1929 in Warren Township and raised in Centerline, Michigan.  On April 14, 1951 he married Ardeth Kidder then shortly after was drafted into the military and served during the Korean War.  After returning home, Mark found employment with Rural Electric Association in Onaway where he worked as a lineman before retiring after 39 ½ years.

Mark was a devoted husband to Ardeth and a loving father to seven children plus many foster children.  Mark was a skilled carpenter and craftsman.  He also enjoyed farming his land, raising horses and cattle, being a 4-H Horse Club leader, traveling across the country with his family, camping, and playing Santa for his community.  During his years as a 4-H leader he was honored with a trip to Washington D.C.

After retiring Mark spent many mornings with friends at the coffee shop in Onaway.  He was an active member of the Tip of the Mitt Antique Tractor Association.  He also enjoyed his annual summer trip to Buckley, Michigan with his good friends.  Every winter he was a “snow bird” traveling to Hereford, Arizona.

Surviving Mark is his wife of 64 years, Ardeth; his children, Mara Jane (Robin) Ormsbee, Candace (David) Pavwoski, Sal Bemis, Teresa Rotarius, Robin Patterson, Mark Rotarius, Jr., and Amanda (Jose) Fuentes.  Mark also leaves his grandchildren, Jack (Clare Sherley) Slowriver, Alisha Ford, Briana (Michael) Golden, Adam Ormsbee, Joseph Rotarius, Jason Rotarius, Travis Bemis, Joshua Bemis, Cayleigh Bemis, Geniece (Matthew) Baer, Melissa (Derek) Mitchell, Frank Brenneman Jr., Justin (Lisa) Rotarius, Nicole (Jason LeDuc) Patterson, Audrey (Dylan Sever) Patterson, Sarah (Andy Morrow) Patterson, Mark Rotarius III, Erik Rotarius, Jose Marco Fuentes, and Isabella Fuentes; his great grandchildren, Francis, Liberty, Christopher, Liv, Xylia, Emalyn, Hayden, Madison, Wade, Natalie, Xavier, Everett, Cooper, and Braxton.

Also surviving is his sister, Sister Theresa Rotarius and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Kelly Patrick Patterson, 57, of Shelby Township, died, July 20, 2015. Loving husband of Anne. Beloved son of Rosemary. Dear father of Kellen, Savannah and Kyle Patterson. Beloved brother of Shawn (John) Burtch, Kevin (Paula) Patterson and Sheila Polcyn.  He was predeceased by his father Kenneth Patterson.

Laura Lynn Martin

Laura Lynn Martin, 35, of Tower, passed away Friday July 17, 2015 at McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey. She was the daughter of Marcia Pauly and Jerry Martin.

Laura was born October 26, 1979 in Petoskey. She graduated from Onaway High School in 1997 and went on to receive her associate and bachelor’s degree in business and accounting.

She is survived by her daughter, Chloe; mother and stepfather, Marcia and Dave Pauly; father, Jerry Martin; grandmother, Florence Hughes; two brothers, Terry Martin and Mike (Kathy) Martin; and sister, Marcy Jo Martin. She also leaves her nieces, Haley Baker, Zoe Martin, and Molly Jo Martin and Molly’s son, Wade Martin; as well as two stepsisters, Leann Bonnard and Nicole Tennant; and stepbrother, Robert Pauly. She was loved by her many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.A memorial service will be held at the Onaway Community of Christ Church on Saturday July 25, at 10 a.m.

Cora M. Mitchell

Cora M. Mitchell, 82, of Macomb Township died at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township Friday, March 6, 2015.

Cora Matilda Mitchell was born August 26, 1932 in Rogers City, daughter of Edgar and Esther (nee Flemming) Schenck.

Cora is survived by her children, Wade (Janet) Mitchell of Utica, Laurel (William) Soroka of Imlay City and Boyd (Donna) Mitchell of Macomb Township; grandchildren, Wade (Kristie) Mitchell, Stephanie (Jarod) McGuffey, Jessica Soroka and Amy (Kyle) Forbes; and great-grandchildren, Arianne Mitchell, Sophie Mitchell, Eva Mitchell, Jade McGuffey, Jordyn McGuffey and Parker Forbes. Cora was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar; sister, Charlotte Schenck; and parents, Edgar and Esther Schenck.

A committal service will be Saturday, July 25 at 2 p.m. at the Rogers City Memorial Cemetery.

Cora, known by Dolly, by her Rogers City family, was one of three granddaughters of Friedrich and Matlida (Wirgau) Flemming.

They built the Flemming Hardware, a structure still part of Rogers City business district. With her and her sisters passing, grandchild, Marie Jaeger McDonald is the last living grandchild of this pioneer family.

John L. Minelli, 86, of Rogers City passed away July 17, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born November 6, 1928 in Chicago to John and Nancy (Tiritilli) Minelli.

Mr. Minelli is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn Tank-Minelli; seven children, Mary (Roy) Paitsel of Virginia, Nancy (Thomas) LeVeque of Cheboygan, John Minelli of South Carolina, Michelle (Thomas) Brege of Rogers City, Therese (Terry) Mason of Suttons Bay, Joanne (Thaddeus) Niedzwiecki of Traverse City and Lori (Gary) Florip of Lake Ann; four stepchildren, Candace (Anthony) Kowalski of Rogers City, James Friedrich of Alpena, Richard (Barbara) Friedrich of Fowlerville and Paul Friedrich of Alpena; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and a brother, Peter (Barbara) Ardini of Rogers City.

Friends may visit at St. Ignatius Catholic Church today (Thursday, July 23) from 9 a.m. until time of his Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Sylvestre Obwaka officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. Ignatius Catholic Church or Hospice of the Sunrise Shore.

Rosslyn Mae Crull

Rosslyn Mae Crull, 92, of Millersburg died at home July 14. The daughter of Andrew and Lettie (Millard) Scott, Rosslyn was born June 14, 1923 in Armada. She married Bruce Crull December 4, 1943 and they made their home in Onaway.

Surviving are Rosslyn’s three sons, David (Laurie) Crull of Millersburg, Ross (Barb) Crull of Indian River and Florida, and Kurt Crull of Onaway; daughter, Kathy Williams of Onaway; as well as eight grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.  Rosslyn also leaves her sister, Eva Gilbert of Onaway; and her brother, Robert (Helen) Scott of Wolverine.

Cremation arrangements were in care of the Chagnon Funeral Home. Rosslyn’s family is planning a memorial service to be held at a later date.  Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a donation in memory of Rosslyn to Hospice of Michigan. James K. “Jim” McGuire, 59, of Toledo, Ohiopassed away peacefully at home Sunday, July 19, 2015.  He was born November 17, 1955 to Alma and William McGuire.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 28 years, Kim; children, Linda Smith, David “Rick” (Lisa) McGuire, Kristen McGuire, Justin (Charity) McGuire and Stephanie McGuire; father, William (Sharon); siblings, William, Julie, Elizabeth, Cynthia and Matt; grandchildren, Kristi, William, Maggie and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Adalynn and Gordon; best friends, Jeff “Bruce” and Paul.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Alma.

David Willie Hilliker, 73, of Onaway, passed away July 16, 2015 at his home.

He was born May 8, 1942 at his family’s house in Allis Township to Burnham and Ida (Whaley) Hilliker.

Mr. Hilliker is survived by his four children, David (Amy) Hilliker of Onaway, Gary (Jeanette) Hilliker of Algonac, Brenda (Chuck) Beckwith of Cheboygan and Sue (Jeff) Ellenberger of Millersburg; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Orin (Florence) Hilliker of Onaway.

Mrs. Thelma Curtis conducted his graveside service Sunday, July 19, at Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of the Beck Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to a charity of friend’s in memory of David Hilliker.

Harry William Moran Jr. died Sunday August 2, 2015 at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey. The son of Harry William and Anna (Vlahovich) Moran, Harry was born in Alpena October 24, 1926. He married Arneta Ann Porter April 15, 1950 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Onaway.

Surviving Harry is his wife, Marian of Onaway; sons, James (Sharon) of Alanson, Danny (Darlynn) and Thomas (Marilyn) Moran, both of Onaway; daughters, Theresa Moran (Rod) of East Lansing and Margaret Moran of Onaway; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harry also leaves his brother, Anthony “Tony” (Sandi) Moran of Goose Creek, South Carolina; sisters, Katherine (Pat) Murphy of Wolverine and Harriett Rex of Onaway; stepchildren, Robyn (Mark) Badgero of Onaway, Kathy (Jerry) McConnell and Jack (Jeannie) Brewbaker, both of Black Lake; and stepdaughter-in-law, Robin Brewbaker of Onaway.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Arneta (1994); son, William Moran; daughter, Rhoda Ippolito; brother, John; sisters, Maryanne Szymoniak, Antoinette Greene and Dorothy Wright; and stepson, Rod Brewbaker.

Visitation will be held today (Thursday, August 6) from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Chagnon Funeral Home in Onaway with a rosary service beginning at 7 p.m.  The funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church Friday, August 7, at 11 a.m.  The Rev. Peter Eke will officiate.  Harry’s final resting place will be at St. Paul Cemetery in Onaway where there will be a committal service and military honors by VFW Post 5857 following the funeral Mass. Helen Kowalski, 101, of Posen, passed away at home  Thursday, July 30, 2015.

She was born October 23, 1913 in Posen to John and Martha (Andreus) Losinski.

Mrs. Kowalski is survived by three children, Geraldine (Wilbur) Konwinski of Posen, Norman (Peggy) Kowalski of Rogers City and Marcia (David) Leach of Rogers City; 19 grandchildren, Noreen (Jimmie) Patterson, Randal (Suzette) Kandow, Nancy (Doug) Gwinn, Timothy (Angelica) Kandow, Todd Kandow, Rick (Andrea) Konwinski, Sue (Denny) McKinney, Lori Konwinski, Coni (Mike) Karasinski, Kim (Matt) Litwinski, Scott Konwinski, Amy (Dan) Scribner, Jackie Kabat, Brandi Tulgestke, Kaeli (Brad) Dufresne, Tyler (Kaelie Fairbanks) Kowalski, Stacie LaLonde, Rene (D.J.) Schwalbach and Holli (A.C.) Hengler; 42 great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild, 24 great-great grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-granddaughter.

Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Martha Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

 

Visitation was at St. Ignatius Catholic Church Tuesday, August 4, from 9 a.m. until time of her Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Sylvestre Obwaka officiating.

Inurnment followed at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Timothy Herbert Haselhuhn, of Coopersville, enjoyed his last sunrise Saturday, July 25, 2015.

Tim is survived by his loving partner of 12 years, Susan Schmidt and her children Katie and Ben Schmidt; brother, Arnie Haselhuhn and his wife Sharon of Oscoda; sister, Bev Merchant of Birch Run; sisters-in-law Betty Haselhuhn and Bernice Haselhuhn; and many special nieces and nephews. Tim was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Hazel (Smith) Haselhuhn of Rogers City.

Tim was born April 30, 1955. H

Funeral services were held noon Thursday, July 30, at the Throop Funeral Home, 214 Church St, Coopersville. Visitation was held Wednesday, July 29, from 5-8 p.m. and Thursday, July 30, two hours prior to the funeral service.

Following the funeral service a luncheon and time of continued sharing will be held at Coopersville’s North Pavilion (steps away from Throop Funeral Home). Memorial donations may be made to the Throop Funeral Home to assist the family with funeral expenses. Rita Ann Sayles (Parr), 69, of Eckerman, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2015.

Rita was born, February 25, 1946, in Cheboygan, to Dewy and Hattie (Stover) Parr.

Rita is survived by her children, Dina Sabucco, Tait Sayles, and Clayton and Christina (Sayles) Boone; grandchildren Tyler Boone, and Nicoma and Cheyanne Sayles; siblings Allen, Don and Scott Parr, and Roxie Penfold; sisters-in law, Annette Dolan, Joan Lukes and Susan Kerr; brother-in-law Walt Sayles; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding Rita in death are her parents, Dewy and Hattie Parr; husband, O.D. Sayles; brother, Roe Parr; sister, Jackie Freiburger; nieces, RoShelle Penfold and Stacy Lee Freiburger; and great-niece Emily Monusko.

A celebration of Rita’s life will be held at noon Saturday, August 29, at the Allis Township hall, 20018 County Road 638, Onaway. Ronald Joel Crank Sr., 77, of Burton, passed away Monday, July 27, 2015 at his daughter’s home. Funeral services were Friday, July 31, at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc. Visitation was Friday until time of service. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Blanc. Memorial donations may be made to Karmanos Cancer Center.

Ron was born October 28, 1937 in Flint, the son of the late Ira and Carol (Woodward) Crank.

Surviving are his son, Ronald Crank Jr. and wife, Deborah of Grand Blanc; daughter, Jamie Stevens and husband, Chuck of Oakland Twp.; grandchildren, Justin Tatum and fiancee, Ashley Lewis, Bryan Stevens, Matthew Stevens and wife, Emily, Trevor Crank and Jordan Stevens; sisters, Pauline Schnarr and husband Lloyd, Linda Healy and husband, Mike and Kathy Penrod; sister-in-law, Shirley Betts and husband, Dale; brother-in-law, Orley Voliva; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.
